Walk up to the Stairs Bridge, take the left into ‘Geertje de Bultsteeg’, and turn right at the end.

This area is supposed to once contain a ‘Mill alley’, ‘Molensteeg’. Approx. round 1350 one of the two mills mentioned in Gouda’s eldest history was to be found at this very spot. In 1353 Lord of Gouda, Jan van Beaumont, sold the right of using wind to Gouda, which entitled the town to build windmills and ‘catch’ the wind. No other constructions were allowed nearby windmills, to facilitate a continuous undisturbed ‘catching’ of wind all the time. In these days this small alley in Gouda’s historic centre was a sort of Green, a meadow in town.
