Turn left onto the ‘Vest’ and walk to flour mill the ‘Roode Leeuw’ (Red Lion). This mill is still operational.

A round ‘stellingmolen’ (mill with gallery) made of bricks. “De Roode Leeuw” is the largest of the still existing mills in Gouda. A predecessor flourmill was built in 1619. In 1727 that mill was replaced by a round brick made mill that was destroyed by a fire in 1769, The mill was rebuild in 1771 and stayed operational until the first two decades of the 20th century.

Miller Galama, owner of “De Korenbloem” tried to acquire this mill to stop the competition. When he offered ‘De Roode Leeuw’ for sale to be demolished the Gouda City council stopped his plans. The town acquired the mill and started its exterior renovation. This was one of the first mills ever in the Netherlands to be bought by a City council in order to restore and retain the original building. Since 1985 the mill is again fully operational as a flourmill processing different types of grain and producing several types of flour.
