Go to the left into the ‘Looierspoort’. Turn the right into the ‘Lange Groenendaal’ at the end of this alley. Walk to the end of the street to reach the canal ‘Lage Gouwe’. Gouwe is the river that gave Gouda its name.

On the banks of river Gouwe several oil mills stood. These mills were to process the hempseed used to produce yarn and rope. The seed was also crushed into oil to use for lighting and for the production of soap. The industrial high days were around 1620, when approx. 30 oil mills could be found in town.
